Driving and cell phones

Do you drive and talk on your cell phone? Do you text while driving (which could be done on a "netbook" as well as a phone)? It is such a big deal in the news these days. "The National Safety Council announced [January 12, 2010] that it estimates at least 28% of all traffic crashes – or at least 1.6 million crashes each year – are caused by drivers using cell phones and texting. NSC estimates that 1.4 million crashes each year are caused by drivers using cell phones and a minimum of 200,000 additional crashes each year are caused by drivers who are texting" (http://www.nsc.org/Pages/Home.aspx).
So, in order to do something to change this trend, "U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and National Safety Council President Janet Froetscher today announced the creation of FocusDriven, the first national nonprofit organization devoted specifically to raising awareness about the dangers of distracted driving. The group will be led by Jennifer Smith, who has been an outspoken advocate against distracted driving since her mother was killed by someone talking on his cell phone while driving in 2008."
"Distracted driving" - that is an interesting way to define talking on a phone while you drive. What did they call it when truck drivers and others were talking on the CB radio (maybe they still do)?
I found it interesting that the NSC referred to a report from the National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration that stated cell phone use was a "moderate secondary task" (choices were simple, moderate and complex) for a driver along with inserting a CD, combing hair, or eating (http://www.nsc.org/safety_road/Distracted_Driving/Documents/NHTSA%20Traffic%20Safety%20Facts%20-%20An%20Examination%20of%20Driver%20Distraction%20as%20Recorded%20in%20NHTSA%20Databases.pdf).
On the other hand on January 14, 2010 "The Minnesota Trucking Association (MTA) has announced a year-long effort to provide information and training to its members and their drivers to improve road safety. The "Keep Both Hands on the Wheel" campaign will focus on reducing distracted driving by engaging truckers, their employers, contractors and the public to follow safe driving habits. MTA also will provide members, truckers and the general public with tips to stay alert, such as:
Understand and follow current Minnesota law, including the ban on texting.
Avoid using a hand-held mobile device while driving. When a mobile phone is necessary, use hands-free technology or stop at a safe place to complete the call.
Minimize eating and drinking while driving. Breaks for food and liquid while driving keep drivers focused during longer hauls.
Avoid fixating on non-driving objects. This includes outside objects, such as billboards or buildings, and in-vehicle distractions, such as paperwork or adjusting the radio" (http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/minnesota-trucking-association-and-members-launch-2010-campaign-to-improve-safety-81421262.html).
So does this mean that cell phone use is just the beginning of laws meant to curb "distracted driving"? Will they also ban eating while driving? Will you put up with such bans?
